My sis in law is currently living with us.  She suffered a couple of strokes within an 8 month time frame.  She's perfectly able to take care of herself and so on.  However, the strokes affected her speech in that it sounds like she's drunk when she talks.  That means she has to speak slightly slower and more deliberately.  The majority of people we've had to deal with can understand her the first time.

Back in 'the day', she was a very talented and in demand chef.  (We're hoping she can get back into the kitchen at some point as that's what she loves to do.)  Because of her past job, she knows quite a bit about ingredients, techniques and dishes that no one around here in my small town has ever heard of.

Today, she was in search of Bulgar wheat.  We struck out at our local chain grocery store so we drove home and she called a couple of the natural markets.  Keep in mind, sis wasn't tired or the like when she was making her calls.  The first store understood her perfectly and was very nice in saying that they didn't have it.

The next store was a little ruder.  I could hear the person who answered the phone "What the hell are you talking about?  What do you mean?  Why are you calling this store drunk off your ass?" and so on.  She just looked at me with this crushed look on her face.  She tries very hard and we've never run into anyone like this before.  Ever.  So, I grab the phone, bitch them out a little bit and ask for the manager.  The manager comes on, I explain what happened, the manager apologizes profusely, asks what we were looking for, goes off, finds it and tells me that they'll have it at the customer service desk if we need it.  After a couple other calls, they turn out to be the only store in town that has it.  So - *gulp* - we go over.

We go in and look around for a couple of other things she needs.  After about 5 minutes, she goes up to the customer service desk while I stand in line.  Turns out, the manager left it at the register where I'm standing.  The clerk at the desk comes over to the cashier and says, "Hey - that drunk retard is here for that wheat junk."

EXCUSE ME????????????

The cashier showed her the bag of wheat and told the desk person, "Here, you ring her up.  I don't want to deal with freaks today."  The woman whom she was checking out at the time had a look of horror on her face.  I think she was about to say something but I cut her off -
"HEY.  Look, I'm sorry that my SISTER IN LAW bothered your store looking for an ingredient.   How dare you talk about someone like you are.  For someone who had 2 fucking strokes in less than a year, she's doing damn good."  At that point I squeezed past the customer in front of me and told sis that we were leaving.  I guess I was a little louder that I wanted to be because the manager came out to see what was going on.  I lit into him, telling him that if those 2 employees were true representatives of the attitude of the store, then we would never be back and I would make sure to tell everyone I knew about the rudeness of those two people.

He just stood there with his jaw open, and I think there were lasers coming out of his eyes.  I'm not sure.  He walked over, grabbed the bag of wheat, bagged up the other 3 things I'd gotten and brought them back to us...and gave them to us.

I don't know what the end result was but I'm hoping those two young ladies - young, hell they were in their mid 20's at least - got a nice ass chewing and a huge kick out the door.  I'm planning on calling the manager later on to thank him for helping us.

Edit:  Just talked to the manager.  The girl from the customer service desk was fired since she was more senior and was working on moving to management.  The cashier got a nice ass chewing and was made to pay for the wheat.  She also got a reprimand in her 'employee' file.

I feel vindicated.  He wanted to send me a gift certificate for the store and I declined.  I told him that I was satisfied with what he did and, quite honestly, shocked that he did do something...such a rarity these days.
