more doctor woes...

This time, it happened to my sister.

She's 31 and expecting her first child, and she's more than a little anxious. Any new expectant mother would be, I'm sure, but my sister has additional worries. She is considered a high-risk pregnancy due to the fact that she has PKD, or polycystic kidney disease.

She has been seeing a very nice female OB/GYN, Dr. P. However, Dr. P is herself pregnant, and has just gone out on maternity leave. So my sister, D, was passed on to another doctor in the same practice. D had her first appointment with the new doctor yesterday and it was a disaster.

The woman, Dr. H, was so hostile and so nasty to my sister that she ended up crying. She told D that she was dilated 1 cm, and D asked if that was normal, because she didn't want to have the baby prematurely, whereupon Dr. H bellowed "AS OF TOMORROW IT WON'T BE PREMATURE!!"

But the real high point was when D mentioned the high-risk factor and tried to explain about her kidney disease.

Dr. H wouldn't even let her explain, barking "You're no different than anybody else!!"

Oh really? I'm sure D's nephrologist and high-risk M.D. would beg to differ. Any strain on the body can cause a PKD patient's kidneys to shut down. I don't know what the hell crawled up Dr. H's butt, but it's soon to be followed by a size seven and a half shoe if she EVER comes within ten feet of my sister again. What the hell is wrong with people? This is a doctor? Someone who supposedly swore to first do no harm, but then harangues and abuses a nine-months pregnant patient to the point of tears?

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of hard-working and dedicated health care providers out there. Doctors, nurses, techs, orderlies...my hat is off to you all. But every now and then, you come across a really bad one, someone who seems to think their degree from medical school entitles them to crap on the rest of humanity forever and ever amen, and those are the ones who don't deserve their titles or their jobs.

My sister ended up out in the car, sobbing to my mother on her cellphone. Needless to say, a letter of complaint will be going to the practice and a complaint will be filed with the AMA.
