A 20-year-old Napoleon woman who worked the overnight shift at a Napoleon gas station is suspected of emptying the cash register and disappearing in the middle of the night.
The suspect was found at a house in Hillsdale County -- in possession of the stolen $569 -- about four hours after she was reported missing early today.
"The speculation right now is that she stole the money," said Capt. Kevin Stellingworth of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the Buddy's Mini Mart, 125 S. Brooklyn Road, about 3:30 a.m. after a regular customer walked into the store and found the female clerk gone, Stellingworth said.
The cash register was empty, but the clerk's vehicle, cell phone and cigarettes were still at the store, Stellingworth said.
After speaking with the clerk's mother about 8 a.m., deputies learned that the woman was at a house in Hillsdale County with friends.
Police found her at the house and took her into custody, Stellingworth said.
Police are seeking embezzlement charges against the woman. Her name is being held pending her arraignment in District Court.
Given her age, it's very likely I went to school with her. And I am sadly not surprised at her sheer stupidity.
