Hollywood Video Blues...

Has anyone else ever gotten scammed by their video rental place?

A couple of years ago, I got a membership at a nearby Hollywood Video, and took a DVD out. Three days later (their max rental time for non-new releases is 5 days, so well under the limit) I slip in their drop box. A week later, I get a call from the store manager saying the DVD was not in the case. Funny, because I distinctly remember putting the disc in the case before returning it.

I go to the store, and he shows me the CD that was in there. I've NEVER seen this CD in my life, nor does it belong to any of my roommates. And, of course...I can't find the original DVD anywhere at my place.

So I just sucked it up and paid the $25 for a lost DVD...but needless to say I closed my membership and never went back to that store again. The worst part, unfortunately, is that I had no recourse or way to prove my innocence. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but I still can't shake the feeling that someone in the store was running a scam. :-(
