On Tuesday I made our Thanksgiving splurge and bought a good piece of meat. Instead of turkey, I bought a pork loin. It was in a vacuum-sealed pack and has a use-or-freeze-by date November 30th. Yesterday we planed everything for dinner to be done at 3. The loin would take about an hour, and my husband was going to make it. He opened it and it was rancid. It was slimy and I nearly threw up from the smell. It's like someone left it sitting on an unrefridgerated shelf and put it back days later. You couldn't tell looking through the plastic. We held out breath best we could and got pictures of the slime, and then opened the windows for a couple hours for the smell to clear out. It was that strong. I had to pour bleach down the drain to kill the smell from meal slime that went down it.

So Thanksgiving was nibbling on sides. Not going to complain when there are people who had nothing at all. It made a good time to reflect on what we do have.

Bad service is today. There was no place to keep the bad meat. It couldn't stay inside, and outside there is nowhere protected from animals, so we tossed the meat in the dumpster and rinsed the plastic. The smell was still in the plastic. It was terrible. This morning I went down to the grocery store customer service and opened the plastic bag I had the meat's plastic bag in and a couple reps right away looked sick. I explained what happened and showed the pictures.

But they won't refund it or anything without the rotten meat saying we could have still eaten it and the odor on the wrapping could be from overnight. There's no one it can smell that bad overnight with nothing in it.

So we bought meat that ended up being rotten, I think we have a strong case for it not being eaten (slimy pictures and the packaging smelling so bad the reps looked sick just from the plastic grocery bag opening up), but the store won't do anything about it because we didn't keep the meat laying around. $12 wasted.
