I'm current taking a hiatus from work and am home all day. Today at around 1:30, I get a knock on the door. I'm expecting some deliveries and it's near the time the mailman usually comes, so I just fling open the door (don't do this ladies, I've been kicking myself all day long for doing this, seriously bad idea). It's a youngish guy - probably around 25 - he was short with spiky blonde hair and blue eyes (not trying to offend any short people with spiky blonde hair and blue eyes, I'm just trying to keep details fresh in my head) wearing a Direct TV polo shirt. He was carrying a clipboard and he seemed ready to jump into a sales pitch. That's all fine and good, except I live at the end of a long cul-de-sac and this guy didn't pull up in a car - he had to have parked way down the block to get to my house on foot. And this is going to sound crazy, but he had blue lips. Like blue lips like from sucking on a blueberry sucker or from taking hits of acid or whatever other drugs the kids are doing today blue lips. It was all striking me as weird at the same time, so I just let him start talking.
Let me just say before I go on that I live in a split level house with two boxers and a cat, so when someone is at the door, I can keep them at the top of the stairs for .9 seconds before they come down to the front door to see what's going on. So as soon as this guy starts talking about wanting to come in and try to sign me up for service, one of my quite large boxers try to squeeze through to see who's outside, This guy just stops talking mid sentence and drops down on one knee to start wooing my dog, petting him and trying to appear cool. Nothing blatantly strange, but I've got crazy vibes going on. This blue lipped guy just seemed to appear out of thin air and now he's trying to familiarize himself with my dog. Sure, it seems like a natural thing for a salesperson to do, but the way he did it was so odd. Or I'm over thinking this exchange that it now seems odd to me. I don't know.
Once he gets done with the dog, he starts in with a super hard sales pitch - he wanted to breakdown sales numbers, sign me up for a free trial, ect. I was very firmly saying "NO" when he was sales pitching me, but he kept trying. I finally pulled out the "I can't make any decisions until my husband gets home" card. I tell this guy that he'll either need to come back or send someone else back after 5:00pm so they can talk to both of us together. He ends up verifying my first name and house number - writing both of them down - and says he'll be back around 5:30 because this is his route and he'd love to try to sign us up. Finally, he started walking away towards my neighbors house.
I watched him walk up and down the block, knocking on doors. I felt so weird about this whole thing that I actually called my husband at work to tell him that if I was dead when he got home, look for the Direct TV guy.
The guy never bothered coming back at 5:30 to talk to my husband.
So here's my concern, we've had a robbery in my neighborhood every few months for the past few years. I don't live in the greatest part of town and it's really strange to get foot traffic like that. Is that a common sales tactic for Direct TV? Door to door hard sells? Showing up uninvited with a clipboard? I am half tempted to call someone and ask, but I'm not sure who to call. I'm not even sure that I'm not overreacting to some common sales tactic that Direct TV uses all the time.
Any advice, validation or calling out for an overreaction would be so appreciated. Please have at my story.
Edited for update:
Thanks to you all for reading my post and all the good advice. I ended up calling all the Direct TV vendors in my area and have confirmed that no one is doing door to door sales at this time. I had 2 different sales managers advise me to file a police report because of past issues with scams/people posing as employees for nefarious purposes, so I'm currently waiting on a callback from the local police department and will be filing a suspicious activity report. Again, I appreciate you all helping to streamline my fears and giving me such helpful advice. Please be safe out there.
