Today I was grocery shopping and had to go to the bathroom. It was about 8pm, and the store was going to be open until 11. The bathroom door was open because it was being cleaned, and there was a man inside mopping the floor (this was the women's bathroom). As the floor was completely wet, I made sure to ask if it was alright if I went into the bathroom. The man glared at me (I mean, really, there was no mistaking it as his normal expression, I watched his brow furrow into a huge frown), which I wasn't sure how to interpret, so I started to leave the bathroom, figuring I would wait until I got home. The man then moved his arms in a dramatic manner, gesturing as though the bathroom was all mine. He left and I went inside one of the stalls. The main door was still open. While I was inside I overheard him talking to his coworker in the hall about me. He said "I can't get five minutes of peace to clean the bathroom, dumb bitches keep going in to use it." He said this in a loud voice, right by the open door. Either it was directed for me to hear, or he was being careless enough that I overheard anyway.
I was having a bad day, and figured maybe he was too. On my way out I smiled at him and told him I was sorry about the bathroom floor. He glared at me again, shook his head and walked off.
Wow, sorry to have taken up your precious mopping time with my perfectly polite and reasonable question. If you're going to be cleaning a public facility while a store is still open, you should expect that someone is going to have to use it. It really bothers me that I was so nice to him and he was still such a jerk. I'm contemplating calling in tomorrow to speak to his supervisor.
