Racism at a hotel

This was shared by a friend of mine on FaceBook, and it happened to one of her personal friends. I asked her if it would be alright to post it here, so here it is.

On Saturday, January 25th 2014, at 10:00pm myself and three of my friends (all African Nova Sotians) wanted to check into a hotel in Antigonish NS. We first went to the Homeward Inns of Canada located on James St. My friend went in to check to see if any rooms were available; she was in the lobby for about 15-20 mins then came back to tell us that the hotel rooms are booked up so the lady that was working there got us a room at a different hotel The Chateau Inn, ran by the same person a few meters up the road. The lady got in her truck and told us to follow her up so she could get us a key and situated. She gave us room number 109 and we paid and got all paper work done and keys handed to us. At around 11:30pm a knock came on the hotel door, we were kind of surprised because we weren't expecting anyone. One of my friends answered the door and a stranger busted through the door and yelled "OUT!!!!!" we did not know who this man was because we had not seen him before. This took us by complete surprise, we then asked him " who was he" and "why did he want us to go"? and "what did we do wrong"? He would not speak to us just kept running back to his office. As we were gathering up our belongings and trying to wrap our head around what just happen, he comes back outside on a telephone asking for 4 cop cars to come remove "these gangsters". We heard him say this and told him we did not cause any trouble and had no plans on doing so. He said "I want you people gone" we asked him was it because we were black? as to we ran out of reasons why else he would want us gone. He said "its my hotel and I don't want your kind here". We stayed around for the police to come because we thought that if we fled the scene it would look like we did something wrong. The 2 policemen came a few minuets later one spoke to the owner and the other spoke to us, we told him our side of the story and I assume the owner told the other cop his version of events. The police were totally on our side thankfully, they examined the room to find no damage at all, one cop even stated "there is not even a butt wrinkle in the sheets" and also they said there were no reports of loud or disturbance. The police said that because he does own the hotel that he does have the right to say who can come and go within it, and yes we understand that but it still hurts that the only reason we weren't allowed in the hotel was because we were African Nova Scotians, it feels like we are still living in the 1950s? And to top all that off, the hotel owner never gave us our money back, and charged us 150$ in "damages".

Minor medical suck

So let me start off by point out I am 5'2" and wear a 38G or 38H bra. I was a C cup when I was 12, and a DD by 15. I have had back pain from the age of 14-15.

So, my back always hurts. On a scale of 1-10 most days it's at around a 6, on good days, a 4 or 5, on bad days more like an 8. So last weekend I did some cleaning and my back started to flare up. I had been taking some percocet for the bad days that I got for an oral surgery I had back in October. 16 Percocet I had...ran out a week ago. So yesterday I toughed it out through work (I have a desk job) and went to Urgent Care. I have only had insurance for about a month, so I haven't had a chance to find a GP. I do have a Chiropractor though who was recommended by a co-worker.

So, went to Urgent care, told to doc that I have been seeing a Chiropractor, but that only helps so much, and I plan on getting a breast reduction within the next year and a half or so, but that I needed something for the pain until I can a.) see my chiropractor again and/or b.) find a GP. Then this happened:

Doc: A breast reduction won't help you
Me: Uh...it won't?
Doc: no, if that was the problem, your shoulders would hurt
Me: well, my Chiropractor says it'll help
Doc: Well, that's why he's a Chiropractor (emphasizing chiropractor, to point out they aren't "real" doctors)...you need physical therapy. Your back problem are just due to bad posture

He then said he could give me some muscle relaxers and Tramadol, which took be aback because tramadol is what they give people who are allergic to Opiates, or are addicted to opiates. Whatever, it's something and might take the edge off the pain...

He comes back and scoffs that my "insurance is limited" and hands me a script for Codeine and some muscle relaxers and told me if I go to the front desk, they can help me find a GP. Well, after that little episode, I don't want to go to any GP recommended by this place.

The whole visit rubbed me the wrong way because it felt like he was thinking I was some drug seeker. Granted, I was seeking pills, but for a legitimate reason. I am used to vicodin or stronger for my back pain, but I by no means abuse it. As I said before, I made 16 percococet last 3 months. I only take pain meds when I really need it and that's AT MOST 2-3 a week, but sometimes I can go weeks without needing any. I have many family members who are addicts, so I have always been careful with narcotics and not abusing them. Also him saying a breast reduction won't help me pissed me off because I know for a fact it will. Yes, I may need physical therapy AFTER to help correct my posture, but the REASON I have bad posture to begin with is that I am top heavy! If I try to sit up straight, my shoulders do hurt, if I have to do a lot of bending down, my shoulders hurt. My lower back is what hurts more and hurts consistently because of the posture issue because of the weight I carry from my breasts. I don't understand how that's hard for him to deduce. I just hope he didn't make any notes on that, because it might jeopardize insurance covering my surgery when it comes time, though hopefully by then I'll have built up enough case history that the opinion of one urgent care doctor won't matter.

I am calling to make an appointment with my chiropractor today, and then I am going to ask him to refer me to a GP who can prescribe meds that actually work well (the codeine has been helping a little, bringing the pain down to about a 6 or 7ish, vicodin brings me down to a 4 or 5, sometimes lower, and gets me high enough that I don't care about the pain).

What do you think, LJ-land? Am I reading too much into it? overreacting? or was the doctor being a total douchebag?

Joy with DMV :D (long back story for a grouch)

I know complaining about the DMV is like shooting fish in the barrel, but just had this conversation which is the latest in a long series of 'why me'.
Collapse )

So yesterday, I come home to find a letter from the Oregon DMV saying that my driving privileges would be suspended on the 28th of March because I had failed to appear in court due to a traffic violation unless they received a court clearance notice.
Uh, WHAT?
I never got a notification for a court date or hearing. Of course by the time I got it, there wasn't much I could do other then cry because 'holyshitwhatdoIdo' (it was a very bad day and that was the icing)

So, this letter mentions the 'court(s) and docket(s) listed below' with a blank space- but there are no courts or dockets listed. There's a contact number for the DMV so I call them today... and had this conversation.

Me: Hi, my name is sunshinenorcas and I got a letter saying I missed my court appearance and my permit will be suspended? (reads off my permit number when asked)
DMV Lady: Uh... this is in Washington. You shouldn't be calling us.
Me: The letter I got didn't say anything about that, it just said I missed a court date and my permit will get suspended. I don't even have a docket number. I called here because that was the only contact number I had.
DMV Lady: Well, you need to talk to them because we can't help you.
Me: ...which I would do if I knew where to call. This was the only contact number in the letter.
DMV Lady: Let me give it to you and the docket number.
Me: That would be helpful, thank you.

So, she gives them to me, I'm thanking her for help (still rolling my eyes a little but whatever) and then this comes up

DMV Lady: You know your driving privileges don't get suspended until March 28th right?
Me: Yeah
DMV Lady: Well you have until March to get it done, stop stressing about it.

We hung up after that.

Fortunately the lady at the WA court was very nice and it turns out the notifications went to the wrong address. I emailed the judge to figure out what I could do and that I was genuinely sorry about everything and I didn't know until now (I have a feeling once I pay the citation fine and interest I should be OK, and it should be paid soon. So yay)

Not just bad, but DANGEROUS service!

This happened several years ago. My dad is retired now, but he was working at the time. So, my mom and dad have two cars. One dad takes to work, and the other mom uses for errands, etc. One day they switched cars since dad's car needed work done. I don't remember what the problem was, but it was something with the wheels or tires. Mom took the car around, it was worked on, she drove home, and dad took his car to work the next day. All good, right? Of course if that was it I wouldn't be posting here.

I was home visiting my parents, and that evening dad called mom and I to come get him. He was pulled off on the side of the road because THE ENTIRE WHEEL CAME OFF HIS CAR!! If he'd been a few hundred feet farther down the road he'd have been on an interstate in heavy rush hour traffic. Had the wheel come off then he could have been hurt or killed! Luckily dad was on an on-ramp and there was a place to pull off, and he was fine. Mom and I picked up dad, and a tow truck took the car.

It was too late that day to call repair shop, but we called them first thing the next day. They fixed our car for free, and the guy who worked on dad's car the first time was fired immediately. Like I said before, it's been several years since this happened, but I still shudder when I think about what *could* have happened. Thank goodness dad wasn't on the interstate when the wheel came off!
