Sucky return policy

My fiance bought a bunch of DVDs at Target this last weekend. He got them home and realized that one was full-screen, and he doesn't like full-screen so he wanted to return it and get it in widescreen. He got the shrink wrap off before he noticed, but not the stickers.

Well, he took it back, and they wouldn't let him return it because it had been opened--they didn't have the same movie in widescreen, but they weren't willing to order one from another store or give him money on a gift card or anything. He took it all the way up the chain of command, and they kept telling him they couldn't do jack and that it was because of copyright laws (which I kinda doubt--he pointed out that Best Buy will let you return DVDs).

It's a pity when you let your hands be so tied by "policy" that you piss off perfectly reasonable customers. It wasn't like he'd bought a stack of DVDs, unwrapped them, burned them, and was then trying to return them. It still had the stickers on it, and he wanted the same title, just in widescreen. I don't see how that's so difficult, really.

Edit: I wonder if people here would be eating my head if he wanted to buy a game for his PC but accidentally bought the Mac version, or something like that.

timeline of events:
march 28
wendy's accidentally charges me 97 dollars on my debit card, but refunds it right back.
march 30
my card is declined for a five dollar purchase. commence me going "wtf?"
check online bank statement. appear to be -213 dollars. commence more wtf
march 31
contact bank. bank says 'it's not our fauly wendys did that, you need to contact them'
i say 'wendys will not give me all that money back. you can, and it won't hurt you to do it since it was my money in the first place.' bank reluctantly credits me 60 dollars (out of 270 total in insufficiant funds/overdraft fees)
i call wendys. wendys says the bank is the one that puts the hold on the credit, so i need to yell at them. i tell them the bank says no. they say they'll have someone call me to work it out within 48 hours.

it's april 7. wendys has not contacted me. i don't have my money back. i am getting VERY VERY ANGRY.
