My boyfriend and I have lived in our apartment for a year under a one year lease. We moved in to this apartment because it was all we could afford at the time and we needed a place quick. This apartment is in a bad neighborhood and the actual unit was just not that nice. So our year is up at the end of August and I go in on the 6th to pay August's rent and to give my notice to vacate and make sure everything is in order. The lady then tells me that I have not yet payed July's rent and owe her $785. Which is odd because I did pay July's rent like I do every month. In fact, I pay $800 every month so that my last month's rent would be lower making my money situation a little easier. We print out my rental history to prove this and she tells me that things are not really in order because they just fired the previous lady but that she would look around and call me if she found anything.
So since we have no receipt of actually paying rent because we drop our money orders in a dropbox, we hunt down the receipt for the money orders. We find one and go to the store we bought them at to find the other one. Success! I call her and she says she has not found anything. She even called the landlord (he goes through a management company) who said that he had not received payment, but she can take the money out of our security deposit. I reply that we have found proof that we payed and that I would be more than happy to show her. She says that that would be fine and to call her tomorrow.
That was about 2 weeks ago. I have called at least twice a day, stopped by the office at least once a day (its been locked), left messages, and tried to get other phone numbers to call but I not been able to get in contact with anyone. I did call the money order company and they said that the money orders had already been cashed. Suspicious?
So I have no idea what to do now, I am not going to call them anymore and just see if they call me. All I know is that I want my security deposit back or shit will hit the fan.
On a better note, we did get a pretty nice apartment that has a fenced yard for my doggy and in a nicer part of town. :)
So right now I am just crossing my fingers in hopes that everything will turn out all right!
