Devils in the Catholic Church WITH UPDATE

I am so pissed off but I will try to be clear and concise while I explain why the service I am getting from my "former" parish sucks.

My daughter attends catholic school.  In order to get the "parishioner" rate, the church connected to the school expects the parents to be parishioners.  Fair enough.  The donation they "require" to be considered a parishioner is ten dollars per week.  That isn't bad and in most instances totally doable.  Ironically there is no where in the provision that you actually have to ATTEND mass, just make sure they get your 520 dollars per year.  I usually give a few bucks during the year and turn over my entire Christmas bonus of 500 dollars at year end.

Now I work for a large company that is very generous about contributing to charities at the request of their employees.  10 years ago I asked them to put an ad in the weekly handout to sponsor it so it could be printed.  Fair enough.  This costs the company 1600 per year.  16,000 dollars so far.  Enough background.

When my husband went to pay our daughter's tuition we were told there is a problem and we need to contact the church office.  So he did.  He was told that we were short 120 dollars last year and we will not be considered for the parishioner rate unless we cough up the 120 PLUS whatever balance needed to bring us up to date this year.  He explained that we usually pay it in a lump some at christmas but the bonus was short due to the economy last year.  Nevertheless, we do run an ad for 1600 annually.  Apparently, that isn't good enough.  Not only is it not good enough...he was told the ad is for YOUR benefit not the churches.  I was shocked by that since our business is no where near the church nor have we ever received any business from it.  It was simply a way to help out.  The office worker told my husband that she doesn't care if we run it or not and we can pull it but we need to pay up.

I assumed this lady (who has been with the church for years btw) was making stupid decisions because she is well........stupid.  So I proceded to fax a letter to the priest to try to clear it up.  Shortly after church office lady calls me and tells me we need to pay them or pay the non parishioner rate and that is final.

I am so pissed.  It isn't the money, it is the fact that after all these year and all this money they are going to not consider my family part of the church family for a $120.00 defiency in 2007 the first time since 1990.  I have decided to pay the higher rate rather then have the money extorted out of me for the church.  I would rather pay double  to the school than one more dime go into their money grubbing collection plate.

Obviously, I have cancelled the ad and will  probably find my daugher another school next year.  It is too late to do anything for this year.  I am really disgusted and appalled.  What would Jesus do?  Not freakin' this, I would venture to say.

UPDATE  August 14 10am.

I received a call from Father who apologized at the misunderstanding and has straightened out the matter.  He said there are many members and the church office workers do not know the details of everyone that does things for the church that mean more than the cash donations.  I got the impression she screwed up but he never out and out said that.  He also commented on my husband and son painting he church hallways this past summer and how much they appreciated it.

I would like to say I am happy now but to be honest, the entire thing turned me off.  I feel like they gave me a "pass" but what about families that have a bad year now and then and aren't able to support the parish through advertising and occasional labor.  If a child has been in the same school for 5 years, and the family has been in the parish for 20, would one bad year get their church standings taken away?  It certainly looks that way.  IN addition, how often has it happened that people didn't sent a letter questioning this policy as I did and HAVE left?
