My boyfriend, a friend and I went to Heidi's Pies in San Mateo, CA at about 3:30am Saturday morning. The restaurant was nearly empty, and we were seated right away. After that, however ... nothing. We decided what we wanted, closed our menus, and waited for our order to be taken. Were the waitresses busy helping other customers? No, they were standing behind the counter chatting. Why we didn't try to actively get their attention, I don't know. Chalk it up to being too tired to think clearly.
Finally, a waitress came to take our order. My boyfriend and I ordered pie slices and hot chocolate; my friend ordered steak & eggs and soda. And again, the waitress disappeared for ages. Now, my boyfriend and I expected to not receive our pie until my friend's food was cooked. We did, however, all expect to get our drinks! But no, nothing. Not even water. I could see our waitress behind the counter on the other side of the restaurant, sitting down and doing nothing. Now, I have no problem at all with someone taking a break, especially if she's been on her feet for hours, but take care of your customers first! We finally flagged down another waitress who re-took our drink orders and brought them right away. (She got the tip!)
Eventually, our food did arrive. The peach pie I ordered was pretty good (though not spectacular), and the hot chocolate was very nice. The service, however, pretty much ensures I'll be getting my late-night food fix elsewhere.
TL;DR: We were kept waiting at our table an inordinate amount of time; the waitresses stood around and chatted instead of taking our orders; we had to flag down a different waitress and re-order our drinks after the one who'd taken our order went to the other side of the restaurant and sat down.
