OK, Amazon, WTF?



My birthday was a month ago, and a friend in Detroit decided to get a couple books from my Amazon Wish List for me, expecting them to show up here in Toledo (OH) either right on or the day after my birthday. The week after my birthday, she mentioned that she had sent a package, and wondered if I liked it. Except, I hadn't received it. We were both somewhat confused, she checked with Amazon, and they were showing the package as delivered that day after several attempts.

Buh?

The following day, I get the strangest letter:

MAGGIE, I RECEIVED A PACKAGE WITH YOUR NAME BUT MAILED TO MY ADDRESS FROM AMAZON.COM. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SEND IT TO YOU OR BACK TO AMAZON. PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANKS, DAVE L[elided] [elided] EDINA, MN 55435


OK, let's review: my friend lives in Detroit, Michigan. I live about 60 miles southeast of her, in Toledo, Ohio. How in holy hell did my package wind up in Edina, MINNESOTA, 650 miles away?

I pass the message on to my friend, and write the fella back with my address and telephone number. He promises to send my package along. Two weeks pass, my package doesn't arrive, my friend is more and more pissed by the moment, so she writes to Amazon, explains the situation, and gives them my address. They promise to issue a replacement to the correct address, and send her a confirmation notice that her order has shipped.

A week passes, still no package, I tell my friend to tell Amazon she wants her money back, then write to the fella in Minnesota:

Hi Dave,

It's been three weeks since I've heard from you, and no package has
arrived. I've provided you with my proper address twice and my phone
number as well.

If you have not sent this package on to me, will you please return it
to Amazon immediately? If you have sent it, do you have a USPS
tracking number?

It was a birthday present from a friend. She's pretty pissed off that
I don't have it yet, and I'm not too happy myself. We'd like to see
this resolved.

I get this back from the guy in Minnesota:

HI MAGGIE..... I SENT YOUR PACKAGE OVER TWO WEEEKS AGO AND I
PERSONALLY GAVE IT TO THE UPS DRIVER. I'M SORRY YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED
IT YET. BEFORE I SENT IT, I HAD CONTACTED AMAZON TWICE ABOUT THE
INCORRECT ADDRESS, AND THEY ASSURED ME THEY WOULD SEND A PREPAID
RETURN POSTAGE STICKER. I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT. ANOTHER THING.
JUST YESTERDAY YET ANOTHER PACKAGE WAS SENT TO ME FROM AMAZON IN A
DIFFERENT BOX, BUT MY NAME AND YOUR ADDRESS. THE PACKAGE WAS
REJECTED BY ME AND SUPPOSEDY FORWARED TO YOUR ADDRESS. PLEASE CALL
AMAZON AND GET THIS ADDRESS PROBLEM RESOLVED. THANKS DAVE


I send this on to my friend, and write back to Dave, thanking him for his response and asking again for a tracking number. I explain that since I didn't place the order, I can't get any information out of Amazon, but any details that he had would be helpful for my friend to explain to Amazon that they screwed up again.

In the meantime, my friend forwards this from Amazon:

Greetings from Amazon.com.

A shipment from the above referenced order has been returned to our
fulfillment center due to insufficient or incorrect address .

Since this package was undeliverable, we have returned the item(s) to
inventory and will issue a full refund. This refund should go through
within the next few days and you will receive an e-mail confirmation once
the refund has been processed. If, however, a replacement order was sent at
no charge because the package was presumed lost, a refund will not be
requested.

As this order was placed via one of our Registry or Wish List options, we
are unable to provide you with the shipping address for verification. If you
would still like to send these items, we would encourage you check the
address with the gift recipient and to return to our web site to place a new
order. Please know we are unable to reship packages which are returned as
undeliverable.

Thank you for your understanding. We appreciate your business and hope to
see you again soon at Amazon.com.


I'm afraid to order something from Amazon myself now, for fear my order will go to this guy in Minnesota! I have checked my billing address, regular shipping address and Wish List address, they're all the same, and they're NOT in Minnesota, dammit!

Amazon refuses to confirm the address they sent the package to with my friend, and they won't confirm it with me, either, because the address I gave them doesn't match the address they sent it to! (Um, duh? That's why there's a problem!)

What the hell is going on here? When did Amazon become so sucktastic?
