I am in my 40’s. I am disabled and cannot drive. I live with my mom who is in her 60’s. Mom drives, but only around town. She does not, under any circumstance, drive on the highway. Earlier this week, I went for an eye exam, then went to pick out my new glasses. Since I’m on a very small fixed income, I went to Lux Optical – one of those places that charges one low price for your glasses. I had priced glasses at other places but it was going to cost over $200 at the least expensive store. That’s almost half my monthly budget after paying rent, so Lux seemed the way to go. I’d been there several times before with no problems whatsoever. I picked out the frames, got fitted, paid my $75 and was told my glasses would be back in 5-7 days. Same as always, no problems at all.
Today I get a call from Lux. My glasses are ready and I can pick them up any time – in Fort Worth. I live in Grand Prairie. Just to explain, GP is halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth. The only way to get to Fort Worth from here is, yep, you guessed it – on the highway. Besides, the store is 30 miles from here as opposed to the mile and half distance to the GP store.
The lady told me that they had been having problems with the store in Grand Prairie and had decided to close it. They had informed the employees at the GP store that the word could come down at any moment to close the store and they should let the customers know before they made a final purchase. I told here that the girl at the store had not mentioned anything like that to me, because if she had, I would have gone someplace else. I then explained to her that I had no way of getting to the Fort Worth location to get my glasses. She says that they can mail me my glasses. OK, that’s fine, but what if I have a problem with them? I’m told I can call and they can “walk me through any problems over the phone”. Say what?
I asked if there was any way they could just refund my money so I could go somewhere else and she said that all sales were final unless there was a problem with the glasses that they couldn’t fix. So now I’m stuck with waiting on my glasses to come in the mail and hoping there isn’t something wrong with them because I have no way of taking them back.
