Last summer my family rented a cute little house in Ipswitch, Massachusetts. The people who own it rarely rent it out and when they do, they say they "pick the family carefully." We assumed they were picky, but excited they chose us because the house was very nice. They were nice people via e-mail and phone, so we weren't concerned about meeting them. Though, when we did meet them, our impression changed.

The man was very nice. He was willing to tell us good beaches and restaurants, etc. The woman was a little neurotic. While she was giving us a tour of the house, she would point out specific aspects of it and tell us how much it costs. For example, she said "the bathroom tiles are $1,000 dollars and brand new" and "we just got our driveway repaved for $5,000 so please don't let your car spill oil on it." We thought this was really tacky and unnecessary.

We decided not to think much of the woman or man because we figured we would just take good care of the house and not deal with them during our vacation. However, 3 days into our stay, we spotted getting hot water. At first, we thought it was just because we all took showers around the same time. My mom took a shower in the morning with no hot water at all, so we thought we'd wait till after dinner. Well, we come home from dinner, and still no hot water. Then we started losing hot water in the sinks as well, so doing dishes became hard to go because they didn't have a dishwasher. My dad was upset, and phoned the man.

He left three messages that day and the man didn't call back until 48 hours later. It doesn't seem THAT long, but we are on vacation, going to the to the beach everyday and wanting a hot shower when we returned. When we finally spoke with him, he seemed very unconcerned with our problem. He was like "Well, I'll fix it in a few hours." 10 hours later, we did arrive and it was taken care of. The problem was that downstairs (basement) it had been turned off (By misake, I'm guessing.)

The next mishap happened a few days later. The cable TV was REALLY REALLY complicated (required 2 remotes and specific directions) and my sister, who is 16, accidentally broke it. Well, not broke it per se, but it got messed up and only 2 channels worked. We called the lady, and she was FURIOUS. She made my sister cry because she was like "I told you not to mess anything up! I gave you directions!" It was really uncalled for. Yes, we did make a mistake, but a MISTAKE that could be fixed with proper instructions. We got them, and it was fixed. I feel it could have been more pleasent.

After those little instances, we didn't speak to them the rest of our trip. However, when we got home, they didn't want to give us our $500 security deposit back(that they AGREED to give us) because apparently we spilled oil on their driveway. We gpt the car serviced right before we left and did everything we could have to prevent it. The street was very narrow so it was almost impossible to park there. Eventually, through a lot of long e-mails and 6 months, we got our deposit back, but the whole experience was def aggravating!
