Pretty mild, but still bad in my book.

My partner and I went to Denny's today for lunch. Now I never expect 5-star service from Denny's. I know better. But I've never had service at any Denny's bad enough to warrant a tip less than 20% in my book. I'm pretty easy-going when it comes to service. Even when I'm in a group and the rest of the group leaves tips according to what they thought was sucky service, I might still leave 20% of my own order. But today just annoyed me greatly, and I actually dropped the tip significantly because of it.

Everything started out okay at first. Our server came by shortly after we were seated and said he'd be right back to take our drink orders because he had to grab something for one of his other tables. It wasn't too long before he came back, but we had had enough time to decide what we wanted to eat as well. So we ordered drinks and food and he took off. It was maybe about five minutes until we got our drinks. Still not bad. They were pretty busy. Finally our food came...and then he forgot about us. We were pretty oblivious to this at first because we were busy eating. Then we finished eating. We waited and waited and waited some more. My partner had already had a headache, but as time wore on it had become a migraine and she wanted to get out of there. However, our server didn't come back.

A half hour passed since we got our food, and we hadn't seen our server. Plus we're fast eaters so we had been finished eating for a good 15 minutes. During all this waiting, I had had the opportunity to notice how staffed they were and how many tables each server had. I saw at least five different servers, and from where we were seated I could see every table in the restaurant. Our server only had three tables, including us. Plus, they had two hostesses/cashiers and at least one busser. I work at a Pizza Hut that has about 2/3 as many tables as this place did, and we never have more than 2 servers, and we don't have hostesses or bussers. The servers do it all, and they do it much better. After about ten more minutes of our server not checking on us, I grabbed the next available server and asked her to get our check.

Our server took the drink orders of a table of seven nearby right after he delivered our food. It took him twenty minutes to get their drinks, and when we tried to flag him down after he delivered them, he apparently didn't see or hear us. It was like he had blinders on to us because the busser had actually come by and taken our empty plates. It was obvious that we were done and waiting.

So in the end he got about a 7% tip. Had I not been able to flag down that other server and waited any longer, he might not have gotten anything.
